Case Study: Cultivating Employee Wellbeing in Finance

UBS has long invested in employee wellbeing, but its partnership with the NAMI-NYC Workplace Mental Health Collaborative has helped transform its culture of mental health support into something more visible, more connected, and more deeply embedded across the firm.

For UBS’ “Mental Wealth Network” ERG leaders Devon Gentile and Jacquelyn Baliko, this work began with lived experience. Devon described learning to care for her own mental health as “incredibly empowering,” and she wanted to extend that support to her colleagues. For Jacquelyn, a family tragedy made mental health awareness a lifelong mission. “We lifted each other up in our darkest hours,” she said. “When I found out UBS had an ERG dedicated to the same mission, I was eager to jump in.”

The Collaborative provided UBS with training, speakers, and ready-to-use resources that the Mental Wealth Network could immediately integrate into events and communications. These offerings strengthened the Network’s ability to reach employees at scale and ensured that campaigns were grounded in best practices and lived experience. “NAMI-NYC has been instrumental in making sure we get the message out,” Baliko shared. “Whether it’s sending representatives to our events or providing training and resources, they’ve helped us deepen our impact.”

One of the biggest changes UBS has experienced is the sense of community created by the NAMI-NYC Workplace Mental Health Collaborative. Devin and Jackie emphasized how meaningful it is to connect with “like-minded professionals” who face similar challenges in supporting employee wellbeing. This peer network has been a “game changer,” reducing the isolation that can come with navigating complex mental health needs in a corporate environment.

It has also sparked a culture of innovation. Hearing firsthand what other firms are doing inspires UBS to refine and expand its own initiatives. “It motivates us to do better,” Jackie noted. “It’s really a gift to be part of a community where we lift each other up.”
